GUN SHOT INJURIES
Across Maryland, falls are the number one cause of injury, followed by motor vehicle collisions and gunshot injuries. As a state committee, we strive to address these injuries through a variety of educational initiatives, programs, and tools aimed at prevention. Our mission is to reduce the incidence of these injuries and improve the safety and well-being of all Maryland residents. Falls
Falls are the leading cause of injury in Maryland. Falls can be dangerous and a significant cause of traumatic injuries in Maryland. They pose a considerable risk to all age groups, especially the older adult, leading to severe health complications and even fatalities. Preventive measures and education are crucial to mitigate the risk of falls and their associated injuries. Addressing this issue is essential for improving public health and safety in our communities.

Motor Vehicle Collisions
Motor vehicle collisions (MVCs) are the second leading cause of injury in Maryland, encompassing all road traffic incidents, including pedestrian hits, ATV accidents, and scooter crashes. These events are particularly dangerous due to the high potential for severe injuries and fatalities, impacting not only the individuals involved but also placing a strain on healthcare resources. Addressing MVCs from a public health perspective is vital to reduce their prevalence and associated costs through preventive measures and community education. By improving road safety and promoting responsible driving behavior, we can significantly decrease the incidence of these traumatic injuries.

Gun Shot Injuries
Gunshot injuries are the third leading cause of injury in Maryland. The current Maryland trauma system model prioritizes prevention strategies, largely through Hospital-Based Violence Intervention Programs (HVIPs) which involve intensive case management and support for individuals who are victims of violence. Maryland’s trauma system collaborates closely with city and state teams to support these victims and work towards solutions for violence. This comprehensive approach aims to reduce violence and enhance community safety.
